Thirteen

After I'd managed to get rid of Anne, I ventured back into the bedroom for a book. Not just any book – I wanted inspiration for thanking William for my motorcycle ride this morning. Something that could give him the same physical pleasure he'd given me, for I knew Anne was no match for me in bed. A few minutes and it was over, indeed. No wonder William had been so starved for sex.

I dug through my trunk, but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere, yet I remembered packing it. In fact, all of my books were gone.

Wait, hadn't I seen Captain Foster's book on the nightstand? William had been reading it and drinking whisky. I glanced at the nightstand, but there were no books there now, so I opened the little cupboard below it. Sure enough, someone had stashed all of my books inside. I pushed aside Captain Foster's book and the hefty volume of fairy tales Merry had given me. I wanted the little book bound in Moroccan leather that held secrets about sex in all sorts of acrobatic positions. The one I'd read and daydreamed about how much I'd like to do all of them with William. And, starting tonight, I would.

A sudden thought chilled my heart. Had he read this and tried some of the positions with Anne?

Even if he had, I'd be better at them, I resolved, tightening my grip. With my flexibility and strength, I was capable of far more in bed than any human. Hours, not minutes of pleasure. As I'd demonstrate to him tonight. I clutched the book to my chest and headed out of the dim room to find somewhere with better light for reading. The veranda, maybe? I thought I'd seen some chairs there. Perhaps there was still some jasmine tea left...

I made my way back to the dining room, where Amah had already started clearing the table.

"Yes, Mem?" she asked. "Help you?"

Help me? "Shouldn't I be asking if I can help you?" I reached for the plate that had held the shortbread and stacked it on top of another that was dusted with pastry flakes.

"No, Mem!" Amah pushed in front of me so I couldn't reach the table. "No, Mem!"

Cook came to our rescue. "Mem? Is something wrong?"

"I was just trying to help clear the table. I'm not used to...at home, I cooked and cleaned up after myself." My hands itched to be doing something, instead of lying idle while other people worked.

"Our job, Mem." Cook's eyes held sympathy, as if she'd had to explain this to other women in the past, and she understood my unease. "If we don't do our job, we are not paid and we must find other work. Your job is to please husband." Cook's gaze dropped to my book.

Had she read it? Did she know what was in it? Did she have suggestions?

I opened my mouth to ask.

Human women didn't discuss sex, and I'd promised William I would be the soul of propriety.
